How you’ll spend your day 

  • Lead the transition from legacy PHP-based systems to modern technologies. 
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to the development and infrastructure teams. 
  • Review existing codebases and architectural decisions, ensuring best practices and long-term scalability. 
  • Oversee infrastructure management, working closely with the single DevOps team member. 
  • Take ownership of architecture strategy, including the migration to microservices. 
  • Manage day-to-day operations, including infrastructure oversight and security considerations. 
  • Collaborate with developers, DevOps, and support teams to ensure smooth technical operations. 
  • Support ongoing system improvements while planning and implementing major modernisation initiatives. 

What you’ll bring to this role 

  • 8+ years of engineering/technical experience, with expertise in PHP and MySQL8. 
  • Strong leadership skills, with 5+ years of experience managing and mentoring teams. 
  • Deep understanding of cloud architectures and networking (Digital Ocean preferred). 
  • Experience migrating legacy systems to modern SaaS and microservices architectures. 
  • Strong security awareness and ability to implement best practices. 
  • Knowledge of JavaScript frameworks (bespoke framework currently in use). 
  • Hands-on experience in infrastructure management and DevOps collaboration. 
  • Experience working with weekly sprints (similar to Kanban) and agile methodologies. 
  • A visionary mindset, capable of driving innovation and scaling systems effectively.

  • Stage 1 – 30-60 minutes initial chat via MS Teams 
  • Stage 2 – Long technical discussion around PHP knowledge, managing/leadership skills & a lot of discussion around architecture
